Artistic Director of Guangzhou Ballet and Academy
Dan Dan Zhang performed for 10 years as a
principal dancer with the National Ballet of China (formerly the Central
Ballet of China). She performed pricipal roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, La
Fill Mal Gardee, Romeo and Juliet, Red Detachment of Women, Mermaid of the
Sea, Lin Daiyu etc. She was awarded the Gold Medal in China by the
Chinese Ministry of Culture toured with the company to many countries and
In 1994, at the peak of her career, Dan Dan Zhang returned to her home town of Guangzhou to launch Guangzhou Ballet.
As founding Artistic Director of the company, she also continued
performing principal roles, including the principal in Anna Karenina
and La Traviata, and won the plum Blossom Prize of Chinese
Drama and the Lu Xun Art Prize of Guangzhou Province.
Under her direction the Guangzhou Balletís repertoire
has grown to 15 full-length ballets and more than 50 repertoire pieces,
which are toured regularly around the world.
In 2005, the Guangzhou Ballet Academy was
upgraded to a National Level School. Thanks to Ms. Zhangís outstanding
achievements, she was elected as the vice-chairman of Guangdong Provincial
Association for Dancers, chairman for Guangzhou Association of Dancers,
director of Guangdong Council for the Promotion of International Exchange,
and director of the Research Center of World Culture.
